Old Growth Forest Fun

Most folks don’t know that Chimney Rock has its own Old Growth Forest. A small portion of the mountain was left untouched when the rest of the area was logged many years ago. This adventure will take you into a special part of the Park that’s not usually open to the public and leave campers with a better understanding of life around us.

Time: 1 to 1.5 Hours

 

Hickory Nut Falls Frolic

The Park’s most popular trail is the beautiful Hickory Nut Falls trail. During your journey, the Trail Guide will point out plants, trees and geologic features that help make Chimney Rock so amazing. What reward could be better than arriving at the stunning 404’ Hickory Nut Falls? Don’t leave the cameras behind!

Time: 1 hour

 

Four Seasons Trek

The Four Seasons trail is sure to please everyone. Climbing through a dense forest understory and towering canopy, this journey is shady all summer long. Campers can discover some of the magic nature brings to our world. Want more? The Four Seasons trail meets with the Hickory Nut Falls trail to make for even more fun!

Time: 1 hour for Four Seasons/2 Hours Four Seasons + Hickory Nut Falls trail

 

Outcroppings Crawl

Chimney Rock is famous for its winding stairs and breathtaking views. The best place to experience this is on the Outcroppings. Join your guide to climb more than 400 stairs until you reach the Chimney and then continue upwards to the highest peak in the Park – Exclamation Point!

Time: 1.5 hours

 

The Great Woodland Adventure

This hike is sure to impress even the youngest of campers. This .6-mile loop trail has thirteen discovery stations with wonderful woodland sculptures kids –and kids at heart –love. Your guide will stop at each station to share fun facts and show some surprises just for you!

Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour

 

Programs

Recycle-O-Rama

Learn why you should recycle, what you can recycle, where it goes after you drop it off and what products are made from your recycled materials. Students will also be able to join in a game called Recycling Relay.

Threats and Thorns

All animals and plants have adaptations that help them survive in their environments. This class will focus on the adaptations that could be harmful to people. Students will learn why dangerous adaptations exist, how to identify them and what to do in case of an emergency.

Critters of Chimney Rock

Chimney Rock is home to thousands of different species of animals. From earthworms wriggling in the forest floor to peregrine falcons soaring in the sky above, there’s plenty to talk about. Bring your campers to find out more about what creatures call Chimney Rock home and even meet a few critters up close!

Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour

The Wonderful World of Reptiles

In North America reptiles are everywhere, especially in the Southeast. Like it or not, we share our home with these cold-blooded creatures! Let your students enjoy learning about the natural history and conservation of our scaly friends with help from some of Chimney Rock’s live animals.

Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour

Skins & Skulls

Welcome to the wild world of mammals. Through the use of skulls and study skins, students will learn what characteristics mammals have and how to identify common mammals of the area. Bring your problem-solving skills to unlock many of their secrets.
