Summer Fun Photo Contest

Summer is all about outdoor fun, spending quality time together as a family and taking in the wonderful sights of nature. Submit your photos of your family hiking, sunlight making its way through the trees or of the fantastic views that make Chimney Rock so special. We’ll use the winning entries on our website and Facebook album, and you’ll win some fun prizes. Photos must be taken within the Chimney Rock section of the Park.

GREAT PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS:

First Place – An overnight getaway to Hickory Nut Gorge with a stay at the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa, two passes to Chimney Rock, brunch for two at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn & Spa, and two tickets for a tour with Lake Lure Boat Tours

Second Place – A Chimney Rock prize package including two passes to Chimney Rock, lunch for two at the Old Rock Café and two tickets for a tour with Lake Lure Boat Tours.

People’s Choice – Selected by our Facebook fans, the winning photo will be featured as the cover photo of our Facebook page for two weeks and the cover of our Pinterest board of winning photos. Prize includes two Park admission tickets, lunch for two at the Old Rock Café and a $20 gift certificate for Old Time Photo in Chimney Rock Village.

CONTEST RULES:

  1. There is no fee to enter the contest. All photographs must be taken inside Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park only in areas accessible to guests between June 21 – September 22, 2019.
    The contest is open to amateur and professional photographers.
  2. Up to three photos per person can be submitted via any of the following ways to be eligible to win:
    1. Facebook: First, like the Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park page and share our photo contest post on your wall. Then post your photo to our wall with the photographer’s name and a brief caption (25-75 words) through your personal Facebook account. Next, send us a private message including your contact information specified in rule #3.
    2. Pinterest: First, re-pin our photo contest pin to one of your boards and follow our 2017 The Different Seasons of Chimney Rock Spring Photo Contest Board so we can easily contact you. Then pin your photo with the hashtags #chimneyrock AND #photocontest with your personal account, and include the photographer’s name and a brief caption (25-75 words).
    3. Twitter: First, follow Chimney Rock Park and retweet our tweet about the photo contest. Then tweet your photo to @ChimneyRockPark with the photographer’s name and the hashtag #photocontest. Next, send us private messages with your brief photo caption.

  5. For entries showing human faces, you must list their name(s) and have written permission from any photographed person(s) to use their image.

Rock to Farm Tour

Discover the beauty of Hickory Nut Gorge, from the highlands to the farmlands. This all-inclusive tour features the scenic, natural beauty of Chimney Rock State Park and the historic, rural ambiance of Hickory Nut Gap Farm all in one day.

Price – $60/person. Includes meals and activities.

Itinerary:

8am – 9am – Breakfast at the Old Rock Café

Start your day off with a hearty breakfast at the award-winning Old Rock Café, which prominently features a back deck that overlooks the Rocky Broad River and Riverwalk. Breakfast includes an entrée of your choice and a beverage.

9:30am – 11am – Guided hike at Chimney Rock State Park

Partake in a guided adventure on the Hickory Nut Falls trail to the base of one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River. This 404-foot natural wonder was highlighted in the epic film, “The Last of the Mohicans.” At the conclusion of this moderate, 1.4-mile roundtrip excursion, feel free to explore the many vantage points of the iconic Chimney Rock, which can be accessed via the Outcroppings trail or the state-of-the-art 26-story elevator.

3pm – 4pm – Fall festival at HNG Farms

Finish the day off by enjoying the many activities of the weekday fall festival happening throughout the month of September. Visit baby farm animals, pick apples in the u-pick apple orchard, slide down the culvert slides, take a trip around the adult-sized trike track, participate in a farm scavenger hunt, and find your way through the meadow maze.

This day trip will include moderate-to-strenuous walking distances and terrain. You will want to wear comfortable hiking boots or shoes. Hydration is key, so be sure to bring plenty of water. Don’t forget your camera to commemorate your experience! The guided hikes have mandatory start times of 9:30am at Chimney Rock State Park and 1pm at Hickory Nut Gap Farms, so please make sure you are at the rendezvous point for the tours at least 5-10 minutes beforehand. Grandparents love spending time with the grandkids. What better way to get quality time together than at Chimney Rock? When you purchase one regular-price adult admission, receive one youth admission free.

Saturday, September 7

Join professional photographer Buddy Morrison for this class which teaches you the basics of smartphone photography. Whether you’re an Android or iPhone user, you’re sure to take away some great skills during this two-hour class. Be prepared to hike to various spots in the Park. Participants will ride the elevator to the top of the mountain and use the Chimney and Opera Box as subjects to photograph. Here is the schedule for this class:

  • 10 am Meet and Greet on the Outcroppings deck.
  • 10:15  Go over Phone Settings and setups for each person’s phones.
  • 10:45  Move to Lake Lure Overlook near the Restaurant.
  • 11:00 – 11:30 Take Photos and evaluate photographs.
  • 11:30 – 11:50  Photoshoot from the Opera Box.
  • 11:50 – 12:00  Final review, comments, and conclusion.

This class is limited to 15 participants. The class is free for Annual Passholders. Be sure to present your annual pass when checking in at the Ticket Plaza. If you are not an annual passholder and would like to become one, please purchase your pass here.

Senior Trout Fishing the Rocky Broad River

In celebration of National Grandparents Day NC State Parks invites senior anglers to bring out their grandkids and try trout fishing together. Have you ever wanted to try fishing but don’t want to invest in all the equipment? You can borrow ours! Meet a ranger down at the Riverwalk Trail behind the Old Rock Cafe to learn the basics of fishing and try your hand at pulling some trout out of the Rocky Broad River.

All supplies will be provided. All ages welcome.

Naturalist Niche: Fall Migration Bird Walk

Cost: Includes Park admission: $23 Adult, $8 Annual Passholder, $13 Youth (ages 5-15), $6 Rockin’ Discovery Passholder. Advance registration required.

The early bird gets…to see and hear early birds! This special bird walk was designed to start before the Park opens to ensure participants get the best chance to encounter a variety of birds. Taking place during fall migration also enhances the number of species expected to be in our area. This hike is considered moderate and is the prelude to our 11th Annual Flock to the Rock event which starts at 11am. Click here to see what birds you might see during your hike.

Join one of Western North Carolina’s most popular Annual events, Flock to the Rock. Originally created to help folks understand why Hickory Nut Gorge is such a premier birding location, this event has grown in size and popularity every year. You don’t have to be an avid birder to find something of interest at this event, but it may just be the reason you become one. Guided bird walks, raptor flight shows, live bird demos, and workshops are a few of the ways you’ll discover that Chimney Rock isn’t just for the birds!

Fall Homeschool Day

Cost: $14 adult admission, no charge for adult annual passholders, $14 youth (ages 5-15) admission and programs, $8 Rockin’ Discovery passholder.

Homeschool families and associations have been coming to the Park for experiential education opportunities for years. Hands-on programs with naturalists, guided hikes on a variety of trails and the chance to meet new families from around the region are just some of the reasons our annual homeschool events have become so popular. In 2018 we’re teaming up with some of our partners to bring you opportunities for more than one day. So, make a trip of it and take advantage of the many lessons we have planned for you.

Celebrate Take a Child Outside Week by joining a Park Naturalist for an interactive hike on the Park’s most family friendly trail. Kids of all ages will love exploring the Great Woodland Adventure Trail to discover what animals call Chimney Rock home. You never know who you’ll meet along the way. This program is open to all ages. Meet at the Animal Discovery Den at 10:30am. We will also be hosting Family Animal Encounters at 2pm on the Outcroppings deck.

One child’s admission is free, with one paid adult admission.

Cost: Included with admission to Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park; one free child Park admission ticket with each paying adult.

Never been camping? Afraid of the dark? You’re not alone. Join a park ranger and take this rare opportunity to camp in Chimney Rock State Park. A ranger will be available at 5pm to help set up camp and build a campfire for a fun filled night under the stars!

You must bring your own camping gear and dinner.  No camping gear or food is provided for this event.

There is no fee for camping, but participants must pre-register on Eventbrite or by calling the State Park office at 828-625-1823. Space is limited.
