Wednesday, September 23rd 2026
Chimney Rock’s Fall Homeschool Day is the perfect chance to explore the Park and get to know other homeschool families! Morning programs are designed to engage learners through hands-on lessons designed to help foster their appreciation of the natural world around us. Make sure to stay after lunch and hike our six beautiful trails. Leaves are starting to change, and a chill is in the air!
Morning Programs – Orientation begins promptly at 9:45 am

Whoo Gives a Hoot?
Everyone loves our nocturnal hooting neighbors, but what makes them so awesome? Our Naturalists will teach you all about our native species and what makes them all so very unique.

Arboreal Animals
What’s in that tree?! Is it an opossum, snake or something else? There are so many creatures that call trees home. Learn about our resident arboreal animals at Chimney Rock and get up close and personal with our live arboreal animal ambassadors.

Spiders
Lots of folks think spiders are creepy, scary and dangerous, but our Naturalists are going to change their minds! Your students will learn all about these eight- legged creatures and why they’re so important to us. We’ll make sure they never look at a spider the same again.

Shelter Building
Imagine being lost on a trail as the sun goes down. One of the most essential things you could do is find or make shelter. This program provides the opportunity to learn how to make shelters out of natural materials. Everyone will enjoy learning how to make an emergency home away from home.
Afternoon Exploration – Begins at 1:30pm

Self-Guided Hikes and Discovery Stations
Hike any of our six trails which range in difficulty from easy-to-moderately strenuous.
As you hike along our remarkable trails, join a trail guide at our discovery stations. They will be strategically placed along our trails. Each station will engage students in a topic relevant to our Park and the natural world around us.
Before you strike out on an adventure, ask our knowledgeable staff which trail is the best fit for you.
