2023 Winter Homeschool Day

Back by popular demand, we are happy to announce our Winter Homeschool Day for 2023. Grab your jackets and winter hats and get ready for a day of learning and adventure. Students will experience the beauty of the winter season at Chimney Rock State Park while gaining knowledge about our natural world. We look forward to staying warm and having fun with homeschoolers!

Morning Programs
Orientation begins promptly at 9:45am

Geology Rocks!
Is there a better place to study rocks than Chimney ROCK? We think not. Join a naturalist for a hands-on geology lab. Students will learn about the unique geology of Chimney Rock as well as experiment on rocks of their own. We promise it will be a rockin’ good time.

Tracks and Traces
Animals leave many clues behind that we often overlook. Students will learn more about how bones, fur, scat, rubbings and other subtle clues can identify what animals call Chimney Rock home. Becoming Nature Detectives, students will get up close and personal with some mysteries of the outdoors as well as meet some of our live Animal Ambassadors.

10 Essentials of Winter Hiking
Getting outdoors in the winter can be a wonderful, unique experience. It’s often quiet and peaceful as the creatures of the forest are deep in slumber. Before you get out in the cold, learn how to prepare yourself for cooler temperatures. Hiking in the winter can present its own set of challenges. What do you bring? What will keep you safe and warm? Let an NCSP ranger give you all the tips of the trade so you can safely enjoy this magical season.

Afternoon Options
Begin at 1:30pm

Join us after lunch for one of these optional activities. There are no added fees for these afternoon programs and hikes.

Self-Guided Hikes and Discovery Stations
Hike any of our six unique trails which range in difficulty from easy-to-moderately strenuous. As you hike, join a trail guide at our discovery stations strategically placed along our trails.  Each station will engage students in a topic relevant to the Park and the natural world around us. Before you strike out on an adventure, ask our staff which trail is the best fit for you. *Note: some trails may be closed due to icy conditions. Staff will let you know which trails are avialable day-of.
