Fall Color Report — Tuesday, September 22nd, 2026

Goodbye summer, and hello fall! Today, September 22nd marks the start of the autumn season. While each season brings something unique to the Park fall is one of our favorites! We are looking forward to sharing updates from the season. Make sure to visit this page before your visit so you know what to expect when you arrive!

Hickory Nut Gorge and Chimney Rock State Park are known for our mixed hardwood (deciduous) forests. The change in color of their broad leaves create a sort of splendor completely unique to our region. Plus, lower elevations mean a later fall color transition. Peak week for the WNC foothills happens around the end of October/beginning of November. Right now, while the highest elevations are beginning to enjoy pops of color we in the Gorge are seeing the last of beautiful summer wildflowers. Don’t forget to look for migrating animals during your time at the park as well. A variety of bird species make the park a stop along their journey, as well as a number of monarch butterflies heading to Mexico, where they will enjoy warmer temperatures. The Park’s year-round residents may be more active during this time as well as they forage for the coming cold season ahead.
