2026 Winter Homeschool Day

Join us for outdoor learning and adventure at Chimney Rock!

Wednesday, March 11, 2026

It might be cold outside, but we are always ready for a day of learning and adventure! Experience the Park during our quieter months on Chimney Rock’s Winter Homeschool Day. Morning programs seasonally focused on winter in the natural world are designed to engage students through a variety of topics and hands-on learning. Plus, plan to stay after lunch and explore the Park at your own pace.

Morning Programs – Orientation begins promptly at 9:45 am

Chimney Rock Through the Years
Have you ever wondered how Chimney Rock became a park? Learn the fascinating history of our famous State Park and the people who made their dreams a reality. There were good times, bad times and everything in between.  It’s been over 100 years in the making and still going strong.

Home Sweet Habitat
Become a habitat specialist by identifying the essential survival elements that animals need to thrive in their environment. During this program, you will meet animal
ambassadors who have adapted to the unique ecosystem here at Chimney Rock.

Tracks and Traces
Animals leave many clues behind that we often overlook. Join one of our Naturalists to learn more about how bones, fur, scat, rubbings and other subtle clues can identify what
animals have crossed right by where you’re standing! This interactive program also includes a short game so students can put their detective skills to the test.

Mossin’ Around
Explore the fascinating world of mosses and lichens. These two important living
organisms play an important role in the ecosystem. Discover where they grow and how
to identify them.

Afternoon Exploration – Begins at 1:30pm

Self-Guided Hikes and Discovery Stations
Hike any of our 6 trails which range in difficulty from easy-to-moderately strenuous.

As you hike along our remarkable trails, join a trail guide at our discovery stations.  They
will be strategically placed along our trails.  Each station will engage students in a topic
relevant to our Park and the natural world around us.

Before you strike out on an
adventure, ask our knowledgeable staff which trail is the best fit for you.
