What’s Blooming this Spring!

Below is a brief listing of some of the plants, trees and shrubs to look for in and around Chimney Rock Park and our surrounding area in the spring.

Early April

Trilliums, phacelia, violets, redbud, spicebush, magnolia, black locust, dogwood, and later, Carolina rhododendron

Late April-May

Shutterbug's Nature Photography Workshop
Dates: May 3rd
Cost: $95; $85 for Annual Passholders
Ages: 12 & Up
The Park is the perfect back drop for capturing award-winning photographs. Take advantage of this information-packed 2-day clinic with noted WNC photographer Les Saucier. Spring Scout Days for Boy Scouts
Dates: May 10th
Time: Programs 10am-1pm
Cost: $14 per scout; $11.50 per additional adult; additional $8 for overnight camping
Spend a whole day learning in our outside classroom. Scouts will get up-close and personal with some of the critters, plants and trees that call the Park home. Then, explore the Park at night and sleep under the stars.

Adult chaperones required. One adult chaperone admitted free per 10 scouts.

Mother's Day Special
Dates: May 10th - May 11th
The perfect gift for mom? A family getaway to Chimney Rock Park where you can spend the day together hiking, picnicking, and simply enjoying our spectacular natural beauty.

Lure of the Dragons
Dates: May 10th
Dragon Boat Racing is the fastest growing water sport in the world! Lake Lure is excited to host the inaugural Lure of the Dragons event on Saturday, May 10. Community and corporate teams will compete both on the water for fastest time and off the water for most money raised for local children's charities.

Lure of the Dragons will also feature a cultural celebration with music, dancing, a children's area, and much more.

Chimney Rock Park is offering our Annual Passholdlers the chance to participate in this one-of-a-kind event. If you're interested in helping us paddle to victory, send us an email with your name, phone number, email address, mailing address and a why you want to "lure the dragons." We're looking for up to eight paddlers.

"Warbler Walk" Guided Bird Walk
Dates: May 11th
Time: 9am-noon
Cost: $19; $3 for Annual Passholders; $8 for ages 6-15; free for Grady’s Kids Club Members
The 2008 “Simon Says” Series of Guided Bird Walks continues with Warbler Walk. Dozens of species of warblers live and breed in the Park. Join birding expert, Simon Thompson, to see or hear all these species including Worm-eating, Swainson’s, Black-and-white, Hooded and Yellow-throated.

"Nature Crafts" Homeschool Program
Dates: May 12th
Time: 10:30am-noon
Cost: $12 per student; $11.50 for parents; Annual Passholders is $7 per student; no cost for parents.
Mother Nature gives us many gifts throughout the year. We will use some of her gracious offerings to create crafts for your students to take home. This fun and inventive program will give your children basic instruction and help their inner artist to come out! (* nominal materials fee)

"Mountain Top Trek" Guided Hike
Dates: May 17th
Ages: 10 & Up
Hike “Off the Beaten Path” through the woodlands of Chimney Rock Mountain to a remote rock outcrop. Starting on the Skyline Trail, this will be a moderately strenuous hike of 3 hours. Please wear appropriate footwear for uneven terrain, and carry some water.
