Happy New Year from Chimney Rock!

Happy New Year from Chimney Rock!

We are excited to announce two NEW COMPLIMENTARY programs for motorcoach groups along with REDUCED group rates for the 2011 season. Why, you ask? Because we want to add value to your group’s visit while the Park’s infrastructure is being upgraded by our NC State Parks partners. The current and future capital improvements projects will ensure that the Park remains the premier centerpiece of the still-developing greater Chimney Rock State Park. We want to ensure that your group enjoys every accessible part of the Park, so we are providing these value-added programs as an incentive to visit.

You mentioned new programs. What are they?

  • Appalachian Music & Storytelling with John Mason - Learn the history of the hammered dulcimer while enjoying authentic mountain music from local self-taught recording artist and Park featured performer John Mason (that's John performing his musical magic at right).
  • Appalachian Crafts with local artist Nora Mosrie - Your group can experience making their own corn husk flowers to take home as souvenirs working with a natural material. Explore this Appalachian craft tradition used by Native Americans to create a variety of art forms and utilitarian objects (that's one of Nora's flowers pictured below).

What other programs/talks are available?

  • Enjoy a group welcome & learn the history of Chimney Rock and the Hickory Nut Gorge area.
  • Critters of Chimney Rock - Meet Grady the Groundhog or an opossum up close as you learn about the animals of Chimney Rock. Or learn about the variety of birds that live in the Park, including a nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons.
  • Wildflowers and Trees - Learn about the flora of Chimney Rock and the many rare and even endangered species that flourish here.

What capital improvements are underway or coming soon?

  • New stairway on the Outcroppings trail (winter 2010-11)
  • Replacement of the stair treads leading to the top of the Chimney (winter 2010-11)
  • Modernization of the 26-story elevator inside the mountain (spring - fall 2011)
  • Renovation of the Sky Lounge Gift Shop & Deli (spring - fall 2011)

How will this affect motorcoach groups?

NC State Parks staff and the project contractors are scheduling renovations to keep plenty of the Park open during peak visitation, but due to the elevator and Sky Lounge projects, we will not have elevator access during the 2011 season. Because your group cannot ride to the top, we are offering special complimentary programs to enhance your visit to Chimney Rock.

Will the Chimney be accessible?

Yes, on foot. Those who are able can take the beautiful and scenic Outcroppings trail to the Chimney. Please note that this hike includes about 450 steps each way.

What if I do not want to climb that many stairs?

Hike the Outcroppings trail to Vista Rock for a lookout featuring the Chimney’s panoramic view from a slightly lower altitude. This route has only 150 steps each way. For those who don’t care to hike, sit back, relax and enjoy the view from one of the rocking chairs outside Cliff Dwellers Gift Shop.

What is there for senior groups to do without an elevator?

Chimney Rock still has an incredible 75-mile panorama overlooking Lake Lure, the Hickory Nut Gorge and the NC foothills that can be viewed from the base of the Chimney. This location is also where the complimentary programs will be presented. These will move to our indoor classroom during inclement weather. Cliff Dwellers Gift Shop will remain open, and we have a delicious catering menu to satisfy diverse appetites.

Make plans to visit Chimney Rock for one of our special events in 2011.
