Scout it Out!

Spring Scout Programs for 2008

Spring is here and Chimney Rock Park is planning our annual Scout Day just for you and your troop. Come join us for this year's programs in the morning and then spend the rest of the day exploring the magnificent 1,000-acre Park on your own. Not enough? Spend the night under the stars and towering rock cliffs in the Park's 5-acre Meadow with your troop and other scouts from around the area.

Spring Scout Programs:

barking up trees

Barking up the Wrong Tree (Boy Scouts)

Tree bark…..what is it, why is it there, and why is it different on every tree?  If you thought it all looked the same, this program will change your mind.  Join Park Naturalist Ron Lance as he helps you and your scouts to understand there’s more to trees than just their leaves!

Tracks & Traces

Tracks & Traces (Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts)

Critters are everywhere but we may not always see them. So, how do we know where they live? By using animal tracks, bones, skins and other traces we’ll explore clues from our wild friends. Bring your thinking caps and begin a journey as a wildlife detective.

Wonderful World of Reptiles

The Wonderful World of Reptiles (Boy Scouts)

Welcome to the amazing world of reptiles! Like it or not, we share our world with many scaly neighbors, and the best way to cohabitate is to educate. Join us for this fun, unforgettable “hands-on” experience that is sure to thrill your scouts.

Girl Scout Day Spring

Women of the Woods (Girl Scouts)

Join NC State Park Ranger Katharine Scala as she teaches your scouts about careers for women in the outdoors. Listen as she tells about her own experiences in the wilderness and how our current generation of girls can build their dreams into effective careers.

Great Woodland Adventure

Great Woodland Adventure (Girl Scouts)

There’s nothing like a walk in the woods, especially one with giant toads and gigantic spiders! Well, not REAL giant toads and spiders, but these are even better. The Park’s Great Woodland Adventure is one of our best-kept secrets. Nestled in the woods at the upper end of the Meadows, this trail was created with learning in mind. Join one of our Trail Rangers as they guide your scouts on a short (.6 mile) “walk in the wild.”

Afternoon Fun - Climbing with FMG

Afternoon Fun (Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts)

Looking for something for your troop to do after the morning programs? We’re sure to keep you busy here in the Park. The cost of the program includes Park admission too, so here are some options that may appeal to you:

Be sure to visit the most famous parts of the Park by taking a ride on our unique 26-story elevator inside the mountain to the Sky Lounge, then climb 44 stairs to the top of good ol’ Chimney Rock.

Take a hike! Lace up your boots and head out on one of our five hiking trails. Whether you decide on the more-challenging Skyline/Cliff Trail Loop or an easier stroll on the Hickory Nut Falls Trail, you’re sure to enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.

Sign up for a high old time! Fox Mountain Guides, the Southeast’s only AMGA-accredited guide service, has partnered with the Park to offer climbing lessons on our cliffs. They offer an array of programs geared to kids of all ages. Contact Fox Mountain Guides at 888-284-8433 for clinic information and availability on the day of your program.

Overnight Camping Option

Overnight Camping Option (Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts)

There is no more beautiful place to sleep under the stars than at Chimney Rock Park. Due to increasing requests, Park specialists have decided to give scout troops that attend the morning programs the option to camp with us! Camp set-up will begin between 5:30 and 6pm and the fun will last all night! Bring your stoves & stories and join us for an evening to remember.
*Please note:  All campers must be packed-up and ready to go before 8:30am the following morning so we can get ready to open the Park as normal.
