Take a Child Outside (TaCO) Week 2012

Take a Child Outside Week is a program designed to help break down obstacles that keep children from discovering the natural world. By arming parents, teachers and other caregivers with resources on outdoor activities, our goal is to help children across the country develop a better understanding and appreciation of the environment in which they live and a burgeoning enthusiasm for its exploration. This year, the 6th Annual TaCO Week is being celebrated nationwide September 24-30, 2012. Chimney Rock TaCO programs are geared to middle schoolers.

Below are descriptions of the programs we offered for 2009. Check back to get updated information for the 2012 programs.

Fire Ecology (2009)

Forest fires are often viewed negatively. Remember Bambi and Smokey? In reality, fire is not always the horrible, destructive force as it has historically been seen. Come learn about fire’s natural and necessary role in the ecology of this area, how we are learning to use fire as a tool in resource management and how fire suppression creates problems.

Hunt or Be Hunted (2009)

In the wild kingdom it’s very important to know your place! We all know some animals are predators and some are prey. Through an interactive game and up-close inspection of some skins and skulls, students will encounter these different roles in the web of life.

Threats and Thorns (2009)

All animals and plants have adaptations that help them survive in their environments. This program will focus on the adaptations that could be harmful to people. Students will learn why dangerous adaptations exist, how to identify them and what to do in case of an emergency.

Scratch and Sniff (2009)

Often one’s sense of smell is overlooked and under-appreciated. As one of our traditional five senses, smell can help us to recognize places, warn us of danger and help us to identify objects – including trees and plants. Join a park specialist and put your nose to the test!
