2024 Fall Girl Scout Day and Campout

Saturday, September 28 – Sunday, September 29, 2024

Gather your troop, pack your supplies, and head out to Chimney Rock for our annual Fall Girl Scout Day. Join us to explore new places, meet new friends, and learn how the changing seasons affect native species. Head home after a great day in the park or spend the night camping under the stars.

Morning Programs – Orientation begins promptly at 9:45am

Home Sweet Habitat
Become a habitat specialist by learning what animals need to survive. Scouts will recognize that wildlife needs food, water, shelter and space and that these may be found in their environment. The program will conclude with a build-your-own animal habitat activity.

Appalachian Folk Music and Storytelling
Gather ‘round as local storyteller John Fowler shares some amazing tales of Appalachia. Enjoy John’s performance as he brings history and culture to life through engaging stories and traditional Appalachian folk music. Your scouts are sure to have a toe-tapping good time!

Nocturnal Aniamls
What kind of animals come out when the Chimney Rock closes for the night? Students will gain knowledge about our native nocturnal species and what makes them all so unique. Meet a couple of our special animal ambassadors and see the incredible characteristics of these creatures.

Turkey Talk
Did you know that Wild Turkeys were once in the running to be our national bird? They were also on the brink of extinction, but now their population has bounced back. Learn about what makes these birds unique and why they are so active in the fall season. Your scouts will love hearing about these fascinating animals and making a turkey craft to take home.

Afternoon Exploration – begins at 1:30pm

Self-Guided Hikes & Discovery Stations
After lunch, hike any of our six trails which range in difficulty from easy to moderately strenuous. As you hike, look for our naturalists at two Discovery Stations along the way. Each station will engage scouts in a topic relevant to the park and the natural world around us.

Before you strike out on an adventure, ask our knowledgeable staff which trail is the best fit for you.

Campout Option

The overnight option is designed so you can bring your gear and spend the night!

We provide several community fire rings and wood. All other essentials are the responsibility of the group. Typically, set-up begins after 4pm. Depending on the volume of the general public in the area, this can fluctuate a bit. You must be packed up by 9am the next morning. However, you’re welcome to stay and explore the Park some more on Sunday after your site is broken down.

Park staff is onsite throughout the night.
